A cup of coffee on a rainy day, works wonders for the soul.
My love for coffee began, oh some 40 odd years ago...
I had my first sampling of this devilish brew when I was only 4 or 5 years old! I remember a visit to a nearby 'kopitiam' (local coffee shop) not that far off from where I lived. My father always frequented this 'kopitiam' whenever he craved for locally-brewed coffee, along with 'kaya' on toasted white bread.
I always wondered why his face seemed to brighten, more and more... with a rapturous smile, whenever he had taken a sip from this steaming cup. The cup seemed magical to me ... and as I looked around me, all the patrons of the 'kopitiam' seemed to have inherited this smile. One by one, they had walked in with sour faces; and one by one, their faces took on this silly smile - after they had their first sip!
I too, wanted in... on the action!
My father sensed my keen interest, and allowed me to tape a sip from an old little teaspoon.
WOW!
How best shall I describe the intense, indescribable, unbelievable ... scent, odour, taste, feelings ... that overcame and overpowered my senses, my very soul?
I was hooked to the scent and allure of coffee.
We never told my mother of my first foray into the coffee world.
But she must have guessed it, or smelt it!
It must have been the smile on my face!
That silly, rapturous smile!
Cheers to coffee!

Thelma! congratulations on starting a blog! yay, now we have yet another thing in common to yak about. I'm not a coffee person myself but everytime a coffee ad appears on TV, I have to go make a hot cuppa. a strange phenomena indeed...
ReplyDeleteWow Thelma , congrats on starting a blog. Yes i do love my coffee though not the ones from Coffee beans etc but just the ordinary "nescafe" or the local ones...
ReplyDelete...and i can't understand when i offer coffee to people in the evening and they decline it because they say, it keeps them awake all night. I have a cup just before i sleep and am snoring within minutes...
Congrats on your blog Thel, coffee is my fave thing too especially if its freshly brewed filter coffee. My sister bought me a little battery operated milk whisk thingy so I can add a huge dollop of foamy milk to my coffee, that and a little sprinkle of cocoa powder and I'm in heaven. I don't like the local coffee anymore but kaya toast is still on the list of my fave things. Oh, ice blended coffee from Coffee Bean is also so good.
ReplyDeleteHi Val,
ReplyDeleteYou're too funny, my dear. Next time an ad for coffee comes on the tube, go make me a cuppa! Better still, call us over for kopi & your famous french onion dip!
Hi Oli,
ReplyDeleteYay! You're just like me! I do fancy a cuppa before I go to bed. And YES - I do go to zzzz right away! It's the Chinese tea (dark copious ones that they serve at Chinese dinners) that keeps me awake! Yum kopi! ;)
Allo Shanti,
ReplyDeleteMore yays - another coffee lover! You're right about the local coffee these days. I can't seem to find the stuff that I used to hanker for...sigh! At times I just add chocolate & extra foamy milk to my cup of Nescafe Gold or Old Town Kopi - works like magic too!
